What Are Some Common Myths About Incontinence?

Updated: Jan 15, 2024

When it comes to medical problems, most people usually aren’t shocked to find out that some of the more common beliefs are just common myths. Even though we have virtually infinite information at our fingertips, it doesn’t mean it’s all true.

One medical issue that faces many misconceptions is incontinence. That’s why we wanted to take the time today to review some widespread myths about this issue. That way, you can be more informed if you or someone you love experiences this condition.

It Only Occurs in Older People

Whenever someone thinks about incontinence, they tend to think of older people. While that demographic is certainly the most common to experience it, they’re not the only ones. Incontinence can happen at any age. When young people experience incontinence, it’s usually due to things like stress, childbirth, or obesity, though incontinence can happen to anyone for a myriad of reasons.

It’s a Normal Part of Aging

Another popular myth about incontinence also has to do with older generations. Many people believe that incontinence is a regular part of the aging process, but this is also false. While common for the elderly, not all older people deal with it. Those who make an effort to remain in good health tend to avoid this issue, though it’s still possible for anyone. Due to the belief that this issue is inevitable, many older folks tend not to bring it up with their doctor.

It’s a Permanent Problem

The next misconception is that incontinence is a permanent issue. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Incontinence isn’t a disease. It’s a symptom of other health problems you can often fix through simple lifestyle changes like diet and exercise.

If those don’t help, certain devices and medications can also be of assistance. A doctor can also remedy the issue through surgery. The bottom line is that you need to talk with a medical professional to determine which fix will help you overcome incontinence.

It’s Difficult To Control

One of the biggest fears people with incontinence have is the inability to control the issue. Even though you’ve temporarily lost the ability to hold your urine effectively, there are plenty of options for handling it in a manageable way. Incontinence briefs and catheters can both help you ensure those experiencing incontinence won’t have an accident when going about their day as normal.

While most people go with briefs due to their comfort level, they have the potential to spill if not emptied right away. Fortunately, there are methods to ensure incontinence briefs don’t leak after usage. Regardless of the type of protection you use, incontinence is very controllable.
