8 Natural Ways to Prevent and Treat Osteoporosis Without Medication

Osteoporosis causes bones to become weak and brittle. Osteoporosis-related fractures most commonly occur in the hip, wrist or spine.

Bone is living tissue, which is constantly being absorbed and replaced. Osteoporosis occurs when the creation of new bone doesn't keep up with the removal of old bone.

Usually osteoporosis is painless and a doctor will make the diagnosis using a radiology test known as a bone density exam. A precursor of osteoporosis is known as osteopenia. There is a blood and urine test, which I use, to monitor bone loss between bone density tests. Most labs offer these tests.

Commonly, doctors recommend medications that either cause the bone to lose density more slowly or increase the uptake of minerals. The biggest problem with the pharmaceutical approach is that it is fraught with potentially harmful side effects.

Because of those side effects, over the past few years, I have taken a nutriceutical and lifestyle modification approach for my patients and have seen bone densities at worse stay the same and at best improve significantly at levels comparable or greater than what studies have documented for the pharmaceutical agents.

Before you adopt any of these, you should be under the care of a physician. Here are my 8 suggestions.

  1. Calcium, no more than 1000mg/day, only in patients with documented osteoporosis—not osteopenia or for general prevention

  2. A supplement called OsteoMins AM (not OsteoMins PM)

  3. Full Spectrum Vitamin K. For those with osteoporosis, I recommend taking the Vitamin K in an individual supplement such as Synergy K. For osteopenia, a combo of Vitamin D3 and Vitamin K.

  4. Make sure Vitamin D levels are greater than 40 and less than 80.

  5. Engage in weight bearing exercises

  6. If you are taking PPI medications for heartburn, such as Nexium, ask your doctor to re-evaluate that choice and refer to my blog on the subject

  7. If you are on Thyroid medication, make sure your levels are in range

  8. Quit smoking

These approaches have worked in my small practice. To obtain the OsteoMins AM and Synergy K, just follow this link; you will be asked to enter a patient access code, which is, 123456 (you will be asked to establish a new account, and get a discount upon checkout. My office zip code, if asked, is 10970).
