How To Stay Healthy When Working an Office Job

Working in an office where you’re stuck at a desk for most of the day can have a real impact on your physical and mental health. Of course, office work isn’t the most physically demanding job, but working in an office presents different challenges related to staying healthy. We’ll give you a few tips on how to stay healthy when working an office job to make sure you don’t let your well-being fall by the wayside.

Don’t Sit For Too Long

Sitting for extended periods of time isn’t healthy for anyone, but when you’re focused on your work, you’re moving even less than usual. Try to schedule a few breaks to get up, stretch, and move around a little to get your blood flowing again. Staying in your seat and not moving for the whole day can lead to problems in your back, neck, and legs if you do it for too long.

Stay Hydrated

Proper hydration can help you stay focused and keyed in on the important aspects of your job. It also helps to prevent physical pain in places like your joints. It’s a good idea to always have water nearby when you’re trying to stay healthy.

Fully Use Your Lunch Break

Another useful tip for staying healthy when working an office job is to utilize your lunch break as much as possible. Don’t scarf down your food while sitting at your desk. Use that free time to take a mental and physical break from work. Don’t look at any notifications related to work and use the time to move around and refresh yourself before going back to your duties.

Protect Your Eyes

Office work usually requires a lot of time staring at a screen. Blue light can do a lot of damage, especially if you don’t give yourself a break from it during your downtime. A good solution is a pair of glasses that block blue light; these kinds of glasses aren’t just for video game enthusiasts anymore. They can help prevent eye strain, mental fatigue, and stress headaches.

Prioritize Health Outside of the Office

No matter how careful you are in the office, you won’t be able to stay truly healthy if you slack off at home. Because so much of your day is devoted to your job, you need to use at least some of your free time to take care of your own health. Exercise, cook healthy meals, meditate—do whatever you feel helps you stay in good health so that your time at the office doesn’t take over your life and body.
