We all want to support the communities we live in, but community support can feel impossible for busy parents. We’re already trying to raise our children, and many of us are working from home. How are we supposed to find the time for community involvement?
Luckily, there are ways to help charities within your community without leaving your home. From easy quizzes on the computer that donate food to crafting your own donations, you can make the world a better place in the following ways.
Computers open a world of possibilities, especially for helping charities and charitable causes. Some charities—local, national, and international—allow you to volunteer from your computer. For example, you can tutor children in various subjects, provide language translations, support social media, and build websites for charities on your computer.
If regular volunteering is too much of a commitment, even from home, that’s okay. You can sign petitions that affect your community on your computer and share them with others to spread the word. For international charitable help, the UN World Food Programme allows you to take quizzes that donate rice to people in need.
Some people prefer to donate their finances instead of their time. Many charities need these financial contributions just as much. Find a charity online or within your community that needs these donations. You can call and reach a card or check number over the phone to make a quick donation. Some charities have websites where you can easily submit financial information and donate as well.
Another way to help charities without leaving your home is to donate items you aren’t using from your home. Various charities, such as domestic violence shelters and refugee centers, need gently used clothes, toys, and housewares to help the people in their care. You can go through your home and gather these items for pickup or drop-off. Some charities provide both options, but others prefer to either pick the items up themselves or accept a drop-off donation.
Some people live minimally and don’t have extra items to donate. You can craft charitable gifts in the comfort of your home and donate them when they’re ready. For example, you can quilt for charity and donate your creation to local charities, such as hospitals, or national charities, such as Ronald McDonald Houses. Other crafty donation options are to make cards for hospitalized children or write letters to active-duty soldiers.
Your local community will appreciate your efforts to make your area a better place. Donating to national or international charities is also a great way to make a positive impact on the world. Doing so from the comfort of your own home allows you to live your best life while helping others.
